Lessons from the U.S. - the Zimmerman Trial Print E-mail

zim_icon.jpgIn the previous edition of Hearsay we featured the article, Lessons from the UK, in which John Meredith pointed out that the UK Supreme Court hearings were now accessible online via live streaming. While such developments play a significant role in ensuring access to justice, the intense television coverage of the recent Zimmerman trial in the U.S. raises issues concerning the potential effect of the media on the administration of justice.

Zimmerman was charged with second-degree murder for killing 17 year old Trayvon Martin in Florida on 26 February 2012. Race was a key issue with the prosecution alleging that Martin had been a victim of racial profiling by Zimmerman, who had acted as a “wannabe cop”. The trial was the subject of analysis by legal panels on both the right and left. Links to a selection of videos appear below.
