This edition of Hearsay marks the most comprehensive publication about the new courthouse project yet assembled. It is fitting the Bar should be the publisher, because of the particular interdependence of bar and bench. I congratulate Martin Burns on the excellent result.

The judges who comprise the courts’ building committee have spent a lot of time in consultation with the architects, and will continue to do so. It is important that the Bar’s particular expectations and requests are flagged to those judges reasonably soon. We are now in the detailed design phase, with preliminary site works to commence in October.

Reading on, you may note various expressions of my personal enthusiasm for this project. I am confident the people of Queensland will, at long last, have a new metropolitan Supreme and District Courthouse of which they can be justly proud. The government is to be commended first, for acknowledging the need for this construction and second, for embarking on the exercise with an appropriately grand vision.
