APPOINTMENTS AND RETIREMENTS

Appointment of Justice David Thomas as President of the AAT

Justice Thomas, recently a Justice of the Supreme Court and President of the Queensland Civil and Administrative Tribunal, was appointed President of the Administrative Appeals Tribunal.

Retirement of the Honourable Justice Byrne AO RFD

17 August 2017 marked a very significant event in the life of the Queensland judiciary. The occasion was the Valedictory Ceremony to honour and farewell The Honourable Justice John Byrne AO RFD as a Justice of the Supreme Court of Queensland.

His Honour’s career is well known. He was called to the Bar on 15 February 1972 and took silk on 25 November 1982. He was appointed a Justice of the Supreme Court on 25 July 1989 and, on 24 August 2007, the Senior Judge Administrator. His Honour held very many positions, both within and outside the Court – too many to mention here. Most notably, perhaps, his Honour was President of the Australian Institute of Judicial Administration from 2004 to 2006 and Chair of the National Judicial College of Australia from 2012 to 2016.

Justice Byrne received the Reserve Force Decoration in 1985 and in 2013 was made an Officer of the Order of Australia for distinguished service to the judiciary and to the law, particularly in Queensland, as a leading contributor to legal education and reform, and to professional development and training.

It is an understatement to say that his Honour has been extremely influential throughout his career – most particularly upon the Court and the profession during his time on the Bench.

Appointment of Justice Bowskill

A Welcome Ceremony was held on 27 July 2017 to mark the appointment of Justice Helen Bowskill to the Supreme Court.

Her Honour was called to the Bar in 1998. She took silk in 2013 and was appointed a Judge of the District Court in 2014.

The Chief Justice’s speech delivered on that occasion may be accessed here .

Appointments to the Parole Board

On 3 July 2017 Mr Michael Byrne QC was appointed as President of the Parole Board of Queensland. He was called to the Bar in December 1977 and took silk in December 1993. He has extensive experience in criminal law and has previously served as Commissioner for the Queensland Organised Crime Commission of Inquiry.

Julie Sharp, who was called to the Bar in 1999, was the same day appointed as Deputy President, as was experienced criminal law solicitor Peter Shields.

Congratulations to the following Judicial Officers who were the recipients of honours in the Queen's Birthday Honours List announced on 12 June 2017:
