Vale Peter McHugh

It is with sadness that members learned that our colleague Peter McHugh passed away last weekend after a brief illness. Peter's funeral service was held at the East Chapel of the Mount Thompson Crematorium yesterday.

Appointment of Registrar - Planning and Environment ADR

Peta Stilgoe has been appointed Registrar Planning and Environment ADR. She will be:

  • Providing dispute resolution services in the planning & environment jurisdiction by conducting mediation and facilitating without prejudice meetings, including experts’ meetings;
  • Assisting the Judges in case management by conducting review hearings and, in due course, consent Orders on the papers;
  • Working with the Judges and the registry to improve listing and registry practice to improve the delivery of services to stakeholders.

A new research centre has been established to tackle legal issues ranging from cybercrime and digital copyright to bioethics and criminal behaviour. QUT PhD candidate, Bradley Schatz, has conducted research centred on the simplification of data interpretation and the sharing of digital evidence by police and legal teams. Mr Schatz has also developed ways to automate the process of tracing and sifting through ‘digital footprints’ to present admissible evidence in court. Technology and the Law Lecture - 18 June 2007

The Honourable Justice Michael Kirby AC CMG will be the speaker at a free public lecture presented by the QUT Faculty of Law and Trilby Misso Lawyers - Technology and the Law: Can the law keep pace with nanotechnology? Justice Kirby will report on a recent conference at King’s College School of Law in London on the problems of regulating biotechnology and information technology.
