Solicitors in Australia have long had rights of appearance before most courts. Many exercise it, particularly in matters other than trials and also in specialist tribunals and courts.
The practice in the UK seems to have “progressed” somewhat further, with specialist solicitor advocates appearing in many courts. This is but part of the story of one of their number, Lord Harley KGCSt.J. DPhil. of Counsel.
Lord Harley had appeared for the accused in the Crown Court in Cardiff before Judge Wynn Morgan. At the conclusion of proceedings, an exchange occurred which has raised so0me eyebrows among the profession. An extract of the transcript may be accessed here.
